Glossary of Tibetan Medicine Names

Identification of Tibetan Medicine names can be difficult for several reasons. Tibetan Medicine names are less standardised than Chinese or Indian medicine names. Therefore, their spelling is often different in different texts which sometimes causes confusion. Where practical, multiple spellings and synonym are given to facilitate easier identification.
In addition, Tibetan Medicine, more than most other systems, often has multiple plants listed over several sources for the same plant. This can sometimes reflect mis-identification by the source being cited, but in most cases it reflects the fact that multiple plants supply one medicine in Tibetan Medicine. This is partly because of the widespread geography of the Tibetan people, with a range of habitats, and the fact that replacement remedies were discovered particularly when Tibetan people migrated to India and Russia. So different sources from different times or locations can use very different plants for the same medicine. Where possible, a number of plants that may supply a specific medicine are given. This can hint at suitable substitutes for some of these plants.
Often more than one medicine is identified in the following list. In cases where one medicine is thought to be โ€˜correctโ€™, that medicine appears first, followed by other medicines listed in brackets. Note, however, that the listing of several medicines for one Tibetan name often gives clues to useful substitutes.
Those medicines with (Skt) after the medicine name indicate the name has been derived from Sanskrit.
NOTE: This glossary was compiled over a decade ago (before 2010). Since then, more detailed and reliable sources have given more definitive botanical names for Tibetan medicines. Therefore, some of the names give may be obsolete.
